Some things aren't true until you say them...

I am walking down the path, and coming the other way is a student of mine from last semester; he's had a haircut, but otherwise he looks exactly the same as he did then.

I smile at him and say hi.

He smiles back, the same dimpled, boyish grin, somehow charismatic and bashful at the same time.

"How are you doing," I ask, and he answers "Fine, you?" with another big smile.

"Good," I say, and by then we're out of conversation range. But I'm glad he's still here. It means he at least tried to pass *something*.
