Some things aren't true until you say them...

10.20.2003 - 4:24 p.m.

Last night I took a bath and began reading. My cat purred and rubbed herself against the side of the tub. When the water lost its heat I curled up in my bed, propping the book on the other pillow, on my knee, on the wall; the cat alternated between warming an arm or a thigh and prowling around the apartment.

Today I can feel the circles under my eyes deepening, as if something in my brain has grabbed the skin from the inside and is steadily reeling it in. It is on days like this that I wish I'd mastered the skill of putting the book down when I leave the bathtub, before I reach the other cover.
