Some things aren't true until you say them...

Maintenance sent an email out to everyone on campus yesterday, to make them aware that they would be destroying a stand of phragmites that was in the way of the new entrance road to the college. Great pains were taken to explain that phragmites is an invasive species that all of Maryland is trying to eradicate anyway, and that in no way was it to be understood that the workers were destroying marshland. I don't think this message was sent because it was Earth Day. I think they were honestly worried that someone would start passing petitions or demonstrating at the work site.

In the words of a high school friend of mine, who visited, then opted to attend a large university instead, "The density of tree-hugging hippy poets down there is way too frightening."
